By applying <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/stimulating-hypothalamus-restores-walking-in-paral\/\">deep brain stimulation<\/a> to an unexpected region in the brain\u2014the lateral hypothalamus \u2014the team has improved the recovery of lower limb movements in two individuals with partial SCI.<\/p>\n<p>The same team has combined advanced molecular mapping technologies and AI, to publish an <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/mapping-the-biology-of-spinal-cord-injury-in-unpre\/\">open-source \u2018atlas\u2019<\/a> providing a comprehensive understanding of spinal cord injury biology in mice.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>3D visualization brings nuclear fusion to life<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"281\" src=\"\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/public\/upload\/fckeditorimage\/82\/4c\/867adb7e.jpg\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption>2024 EPFL \/ Laboratory for Experimental Museology (EM+) - CC-BY-SA 4.0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>EPFL was selected by the EUROfusion consortium to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/3d-visualization-brings-nuclear-fusion-to-life\/\">an advanced visualization system<\/a> for a preliminary process in nuclear fusion. The system is designed to turn reams of simulation and testing data into real-time graphics worthy of today\u2019s advanced video games.<\/p>\n<p>The Laboratory for Experimental Museology (EM+) specializes in this technology and has developed this program that turns the terabytes of data generated from the tokamak simulations and testing carried out by the Swiss Plasma Center into an immersive 3D visualization experience.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moving objects precisely with sound<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the Laboratory of Wave Engineering have succeeded in directing floating objects around an aquatic obstacle course using only soundwaves. Their novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/moving-objects-precisely-with-sound-2\/\">optics-inspired method<\/a> holds great promise for biomedical applications such as noninvasive targeted drug delivery.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>An entire brain-machine interface on a chip<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"281\" src=\"\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/public\/upload\/fckeditorimage\/15\/dd\/6833aa49.jpg\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption>Researchers from EPFL have developed a next-generation miniaturized brain-machine interface.<br \/> 2024 EPFL \/ Lundi13 - CC-BY-SA 4.0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Researchers from the Integrated Neurotechnologies Laboratory have developed a next-generation <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/an-entire-brain-machine-interface-on-a-chip\/\">miniaturized brain-machine interface<\/a> capable of direct brain-to-text communication on tiny silicon chips.<\/p>\n<p>At the Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurement, scientists have successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/miniaturizing-a-laser-on-a-photonic-chip\/\">miniaturized a powerful erbium-based fiber laser<\/a> on a silicon-nitride photonic chip. Since typical erbium-based fiber lasers are large and difficult to scale down, the breakthrough promises advances in optical communications and sensing technologies.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unifying behavioral analysis through animal foundation models<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Behavioral analysis can provide a lot of information about the health status or motivations of a living being. A new technology developed at the Bertarelli Foundation Chair of Integrative Neuroscience makes it possible for a single deep learning model to detect animal motion across many species and environments. This \u201cfoundational model\u201d called <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/unifying-behavioral-analysis-through-animal-founda\/\">SuperAnimal<\/a>, can be used for animal conservation, biomedicine, and neuroscience research.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could ChatGPT get an engineering degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"281\" src=\"\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/public\/upload\/fckeditorimage\/09\/6f\/8aecd87b.jpg\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption>Study and research of artificial intelligence. \u00a9 2024 iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>GPT-4 answers an average of 65.8% of <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/could-chatgpt-get-an-engineering-degree\/\">university assessment questions<\/a> correctly, and can even produce the correct answer across at least one prompting strategy for 85.1% of questions.
